Laura is a Licensed and Registered Dietitian/Nutritionist and the founder of Summerfield Custom Wellness. As the Director of Nutrition Services, she is obsessed with emerging nutrition research which she brings back to our patients and our dietitians through program, resource, and content creation as well as team coaching and development.
Originally from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Laura moved to North Carolina in 2009 to pursue her dietetics education. She earned her master’s degree in Public Health at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and completed her dietetic internship rotations at the North Carolina State Health Department in Raleigh, New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington, and the Caribbean Exploratory Research Center in St. Thomas.
Laura got her start in the health industry in 2004 as a corporate trainer for a fitness franchise, opening new facilities and teaching owner and manager training seminars across the country. While earning her master’s degree, she worked as a Health Promotion Specialist for UNC Campus Health Services. For her master’s research, she explored the connection between health, weight, and body image among Afro-Caribbean women in the US Virgin Islands. After graduation, she became the Public Health Educator for a diabetes grant in Cabarrus County. When she moved to Wilmington in 2013, Laura began working as the Nutrition Coordinator for Employee Health at NHRMC while she slowly started building her private practice.
All these years later, Laura is grateful to spread the Summerfield Mission & Vision alongside the amazing teams in Raleigh and Wilmington. Laura started her career with a focus on digestive health, weight loss, and diabetes management, but through her own health journey, she has evolved into a specialist in functional and integrative nutrition.
Laura is a promoter of positive body image and emotional health as important pillars of wellness. She loves working with people to help make some sense out of all the nutrition information in the world and watching them use their new knowledge and skills to make sustainable changes.
